ground penetrating radar surveys
Select Surveys have been using Ground Penetrating radar for many years. Initially the effectiveness of the technology was restricted; however, following significant investment in development, it is now a more successful technique in the field of utility location.
As an independent survey company who are not linked to manufacturers, our unbiased view of the technology has determined that certain multi-antenna systems are indeed effective and in the correct environment add qualities to a traditional electromagnetic RD survey. Radar has the ability to find non metallic mains such as AC and PE water and gas along with culverts and other obstructions that can not be located with signal transmitting devices due to lack of metallic composition and inaccessibility.
Using Radar, we have had much success in many locations, particularly those where the ground conditions would otherwise not be conducive to alternative surveying techniques. Unlike some companies in the utility location industry, we take the view that if we believe radar is not
appropriate for a survey we will not advise utilising it and avoid the cost implications of doing so. Conversely, if we are performing an electromagnetic utility survey and we are confident that radar would improve the quality and be a valuable addition to the output, we will of course recommend the use.
We successfully use this technology in the following applications; to locate non metallic plant, voids and tunnels, sub surface structures, ground variations, directional drill and bore hole clearance and finally as a confirmation tool to check the depths of plant located by our electromagnetic utility surveys.
- Non intrusive
- Depth and positioning of cables
- Buried service surveys including non-metallics
- Tunnel and void location
- Environmental
- Structural
- Mine shaft location
- Electronic trial holes
