1/ Utility surveys
Using the most up-to-date radar and radio technology, Select can locate, map and record the position of utility services. This again is a service we have provided nationally for many years and our surveyors are very well trained and experienced. We have worked in cities nationwide, being responsible for the safe works carried out in conjunction with every major utility.

2/ Sewer duct and abandoned plant surveys
Select can provide full surveys on most communication ducts, sewers and abandoned pipes. If required, this may include water jetting, followed by a CCTV survey to search and advise of structural defects, blockages, buried manholes, collapsed ducts etc. Our surveyors are trained to locate the exact position and depth of the pipe using a sonde or flexitrace.

3/ Directional drill survey
As directional drilling has become more widely employed in the UK over past years, pre-drill utility surveys have become a necessity. Recently our directional drill surveys have been extensively used on Transco works, as well as communications crossing across major junctions and roads. Dependent on the client's specification, we can give depths of most plant that has metallic content and utilities that we have access to send a sonde or flexitrace down. Utilities that we are unable to locate with radio techniques are usually locatable using a Ground Penetrating Radar system.

4/ Ground Penetrating Radar
Radar technology has been available for many years. Through on-going development, a breakthrough in the technology, training and usage of GPR has brought it forward in leaps and bounds. It has now been concluded by Select that the use of GPR combined with a conventional radio utility survey is by far the best utility survey available on the market. Our results speak for themselves, and once our clients receive the topographical drawing produced from such a survey, they are always very satisfied.

5/ Electronic no-dig trial holes
With the use of electronic trial holes we can eliminate the need for extensive noticing and trial holing. We find that the most effective method for this service is to run the radar generated trial holes in conjunction with conventional trial holes. This enables the contractor to obtain soil samples and evaluate ground conditions along the route. Whilst this is not essentially necessary, we do advise approximately one manual trial hole to every ten electronically generated.

6/ As built surveys
As built surveys are a service that Select has been performing for many years. We can undertake such surveys in various formats, digitally or manually mapping complete networks to individual services, using various techniques. Our CAD operators can map in several formats i.e. 2D, 3D with 3 point measurements and depths, dependent on the client specification. As many communication trunk routes are already constructed, we have received larger quantities of service plotting work than ever. We can also offer our clients a confirmation of plant service whereby we walk the routes of the clients plant and check duct configurations. If required we can locate the ducts on the surface to show the exact position and depths of the ducts. All of this information can be appended to a digital drawing, if so desired.

7/ Differential Global Positioning System survey
Differential Global Positioning System surveys are now more widely used in the industry than ever. This system utilises a network of 24 orbiting satellites that continuously broadcast a signal that our receiver/transmitter locks on to, giving a sub metre co-ordinate. This can then be de-coded and exported into CAD applications. The system can be linked with our utility location devices giving an even more accurate position of plant.

8/ Cathodic Protection and Fault Finding
Select can offer the service of Cathodic Protection fault finding with the use of the current mapping techniques created by Radiodetection. This system can comprehensively find faults along any cathodically protected plant. We also have the ability to perform fault finding on electricity cables and have done so on numerous occasions for various councils and contractors. Our electrical faultfinder has many years of experience and is, in fact, from an electricity management background.

9/ Training in Utility Survey Techniques
A number of our senior surveyors and management have been trained in utility survey training techniques. With many companies opting to mark utilities themselves when constructing, Select have found that on-site training in utility location techniques can be very beneficial to gangs, site agents and even the contractor's designated utility surveyors. Whilst our clients appreciate that their staff would take a very long time to get to our standard of training, they have found our on-site training programme very useful as have other surveying companies. We find that regular audits after training help to keep utility damage levels to a minimum.
